Structural Damages Resulting from Floods
Flooding
in one’s home can throw many people into a panic as they quickly grab towels to
soak up the water. While this method may get rid of the liquid standing in the
middle of the living room floor, damage may already be done to the structural
integrity of the home. Directly after a flood, homeowners should seek
professional services to remedy the problem thoroughly, particularly when it
comes to the following components.
Wooden Frames
Wood can absorb and release moisture without suffering a great deal of damage.
It's when the wood is submerged or unable to dry thoroughly that problems
within the framework begin to develop. This is why ventilation systems and
air-circulating fans are installed in roofs. Unfortunately, the frame work
within the base of the walls is less likely to dry as quickly after a flood.
This could cause problems later on as the wood becomes less resistant to the weight
and pressure it has to withstand.
Floor Boards
Water that remains on the floor boards or baseboards can begin to cause the
materials to rot. Although this is usually the case in situations where water
is constantly being absorbed, it can cause problems for the homeowner at a
later date. This is often seen in areas of the floor that are adjacent to the
walls and corners. Without proper drying techniques, hard-to-reach nooks and
crannies can be susceptible to water damage.
