Causes of Mold in the House

While areas such as the shower and basement are most vulnerable to mold, other areas such as ceiling tiles, drywall, roof, and carpets, among others, can also become infested by mold. Mold manifests in certain conditions and factors, and these include lack of sunlight, moisture, warmth, oxygen, mold spores, and food sources. When one or more of these are present, mold will begin to grow in a span of one to two days.

One of the most common causes of mold is humidity. During stretches of rain, it is common to see mold growing on the surfaces around the house. This means that in areas where there is high natural humidity, then mold growth would be a recurring problem. Another cause is leaking pipes. If the leaks are left undetected, then mold will likely appear. To avoid this, it’s best to regularly check your plumbing to determine if there are any leaks and fix them as soon as possible.

Additionally, the roof must also be checked for leaks since mold doesn’t always appear on the surface and can grow on the back side of dry walls, the top of ceiling tiles, and in paneling. Caution must be exercised when inspecting for hidden mold, as one wrong move may release spores and worsen the situation.
