How Prepared Are You for a Disaster?

Most homeowners expect dealing with disasters like floods and fire. They set up extinguishers around the house, make sure that furniture can be moved at any time and buy insurance. In implementing these measures, one makes himself capable of reacting to the accident as it happens. However, a lot of people are unprepared for the consequent clean-up after. Floods, for instance, require immediate attention as water damage is a time-sensitive threat. Here are some tips for effective DIY clean up:

How to Do Immediate Clean Up

DUMP EXCESS WATER: Obviously, one should remove all standing water in the flooded area, best done through a water pump.

TAKE FURNITURE/SOILED OBJECTS OUT: Put all affected furniture outside in order to be aired out. Dispose of anything that is too damaged for repair. For books and pictures, wipe them down gently with a wet cloth and let air dry.

REMOVE MUD: It’s possible that the water entering your home is brackish and as such will have mud. This can be cleaned with a shovel, much like one clears a path during a snowstorm. Just make sure that you wear rubber boots and gloves as a precaution as the mud may contain dangerous bacteria and germs. After cleaning, you may also clear away residual mud with a hose.

CLEAN AND DISINFECT: Fill a bucket with warm water and add two tablespoons of chlorinated bleach per gallon. Scrub all affected walls, floor, shelves and other affected areas of the house with this mixture. This will help disinfect the house.

REDUCE MOISTURE: Open windows and doors in order to air out the area. It will not be wise to turn on electricity for this purpose until an electrician has checked the premises.
