Handling a Crawlspace Moisture Problem

Crawlspaces are one of the many important features of a home. Without them, there would be no way to access the structure’s electrical and plumbing systems should they ever be in need of repair or replacement. Most of the time, crawlspaces need to be vented to allow air to circulate from the space to the building exterior. Depending on where you live, however, venting a crawlspace can be suboptimal; the vents may introduce humid exterior air into the property, causing excess moisture in building materials, which can lead to a multitude of problems.

If your home has an HVAC duct system in the crawlspace and that system leaks, it can encourage mold growth due to condensate accumulating from a temperature differential. Eventually, that excess moisture can find its way into your HVAC system and spew foul, unhealthy air into your home or business.  In addition, the moisture can lead to an increase in harmful microbes and particles in the air which can be dangerous to breathe.

It isn’t advisable for homeowners to attempt solving a crawlspace moisture problem without professional help, as the task requires special equipment and a fair amount of expertise to handle. You want your problem fixed correctly the first time around so that it doesn’t turn into a recurring issue. Ultimately, you’ll need to hire a quality water damage restoration company to take care of any moisture problems in your crawlspace.
